Samsung and Sanyo Katana both made attempts at the RAZR form and the LG CU500 is exceedingly similar in looks. However, to call the LG CU500 a clone would constitute a disservice since the LG CU500 is so much more than just having a similar form. It’s the first HSDPA phone handset that can reach connection speeds up to 1.8Mbps, the first of its kind in North America. Along with the high speeds, the LG CU500 includes Cingular Video, video streaming service and a music service portal. The LG CU500 camera phone also has a 1.3-megapixel camera, an audio player, and a speakerphone. An LG CU500 can certainly be considered one of Cingular's flagship cellular phones. The LG CU500 currently sells for a retail price of about $180, but you can get it for about $80 with a two-year service agreement and discounts. One of the latest in a line of phones, the LG CU500 was inspired by the Razr's design. Similar to the Samsung MM-A900 and the Sanyo Katana, the LG CU500 is a flip phone with the same wide body and a skinny profile. With the inclusion of a rotating camera lens and external music controls, the LG CU500 camera phone actually looks more like the MM-A900. The music controls are right underneath the display. This comes in handy because you don’t have to open the phone to access your music. The music control buttons consist of play/pause, rewind and fast forward. You can also access the camera and camcorder without having to open the phone. The task button that allows you to multitask between applications is great in theory, but so skinny that it is hard to use. The same can also be said for the volume rocker. The rotating camera lens swivels up to 180 degrees which makes it easy to switch from taking photos of others to shooting self-portraits. The camera itself has a 4x zoom and takes pictures with 4 resolution settings. The LG CU500 camera phone also comes with a self timer, reverse view mode, white balance, color effects, multishot and 3 shutter tones. You also have the option of shooting up to 14 minutes of video at a top speed of 15 frames per second. The photo quality is good; however, low lighting environments are less than optimal. Although it’s a bit small, the display screen supports 65,000 colors and the background can be customized. You can use the display as a self-portrait view finder. It also displays the obvious things such as date, time, signal strength and Caller ID as well as the song you’re currently playing on the music player. Overall, the LG CU500 camera phone is a smart choice for your cellular phone needs.
