Rim Blackberry Pearl 8100 Camera Phone Evaluation

RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Camera Phone Evaluation | Evaluating the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100

BlackBerry has had a long association with business professionals. The name is equated to a corporate tool for professionals who seem to have an addictive need for continuous e-mail access. This device from Research In Motion has built up a status image comparable to the technologically advanced multimedia phones. But change is in the wind. The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 is the first BlackBerry to have a camera and an audio/video player. With the advent of the Pearl 8100, BlackBerry has finally decided to shed its all business image and enter the realm of multimedia camera phones.

Now available from T-Mobile, you can get your hands on a RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 camera phone for only $350 if you sign a two year contract. The Pearl is candy bar-style and sports a shiny black-and-silver finish. It weighs noticeably less and is smaller than earlier models. The Pearl looks more like a normal cellular phone than other BlackBerry devices. The unfortunate trade off of its smaller size is that the tiny keys are difficult to push even with a fingernail.

Similar to the BlackBerry 7100 series, the Pearl 8100 features a modified QWERTY keyboard. It saves space by combining two letters per key. This keyboard will also suggest words based on the first few letters you type. When it guesses correctly, this SureType system is a big time-saver. However, it often doesn’t guess correctly and typing can become a time-consuming chore.

The talk time battery life of the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 camera phone is excellent. The phone quality leaves something to be desired with some calls being crisp and clear, while others are echoed or muffled sounding. The 1.3 megapixel camera, while easy to access, lacks the appropriate shutter control. The trackball is used to take pictures and because it rolls, it can cause you to accidentally zoom too close for the photo you are trying to capture. The photo quality is average and the snapshots often lack crispness. The Pearl won’t capture video, but it will play video clips and the viewing quality is excellent.

The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 camera phone is also the first BlackBerry to have a music player. The music player, like the camera, lacks dedicated controls. The desktop manager software makes it easy to transfer AAC, MP3 and WAV files to the Pearl. For a bit more money, you can add a microSD card to store your music. While the media card is an excellent add-on feature, it is very inconvenient. To access the card, you must remove both the back of the phone as well as the battery.

Regardless of the rough spots, the RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 camera phone still the well executed business device we have come to expect from BlackBerry. The extra features didn’t dampen its prowess as a fabulous messaging system or e-mail service which has made BlackBerry so popular with executives. The RIM BlackBerry Pearl 8100 camera phone is still a winner.
