Sony Ericsson W810 Camera Phone Evaluation

Sony Ericsson W810 Camera Phone Evaluation | Evaluating the Sony Ericsson W810 Camera Phone

Sony, most famously known for Walkman music players, has drawn from its musical roots to create an outstanding cellular phone with multimedia capabilities. While this cellular phone couldn’t possibly replace an iPod, the Sony Ericsson's W810 does an excellent job as both a camera phone and a multimedia player.

The LG CU500 camera phone also has a 1.3-megapixel camera, an audio player, and a speakerphone. An LG CU500 can certainly be considered one of Cingular's flagship cellular phones. The LG CU500 currently sells for a retail price of about $180, but you can get it for about $80 with a two-year service agreement and discounts.

As a candy bar-style camera phone, the Sony Ericsson W810 has a somewhat boxy appearance in comparison to other mobile phones. It works well offering decent voice quality and volume; however, it does have the tendency to become uncomfortable during long calls. The talk-time battery life lasted an impressive 10 hours during tests.

The W810 camera phone is Sony Ericsson's latest additions to its Walkman line of phones. Its musical roots are an impressive display and the multimedia features are a breed apart from the rest of the herd. You're given a choice between launching the Walkman functions or the phone's entire range of features when you start up the phone. This cell phone pauses your currently playing song automatically when you receive an incoming call and then automatically resumes play after you hang up.

The W810 has its own PC software for transferring songs onto the 512MB Memory Stick Duo card which is also included with your purchase. Although you can’t create playlists on your PC, the software is simple to use. You can create a playlist on your phone, but the process isn’t as user friendly as it should be. The 2.0 megapixel camera and Memory Stick Duo slot complete the features of this mobile communication device.

Sony Ericsson’s W810 packs a lot of features into a small space but the controls are small and awkward. The limited space doesn’t leave enough room for dedicated send and end phone buttons. The controls adjust quickly, and the ability to scroll through the music collection is rapid, but the W810 layout leaves something to be desired.

Sony’s W810 isn’t for those who sticker shock easily; an unlocked handset will set you back $500. It’s a high end cell phone to be sure, but if you're looking for a cellular phone that can do double duty as a digital music player, the Sony Ericsson W810 camera phone could be the right cell phone for you.
